Christmas Caroling

(Scroll down for English)

Fourteen of us from Denen Grace went caroling last Sunday afternoon to two retirement homes, one in Suenaga (Mizonokuchi), and another in Utsukushigaoka (Yokohama). The residents enthusiastically clapped, smiled, and moved their mouths in unison to the Christmas carols. When we finished our selection of songs, one resident said, "Oh, I wanted to hear one more." So, we sang an impromptu encore of "Itotakaki" (the word of Luke 2:14). It was great to bring a bit of Christmas joy to these wonderful people.

Charity Concert

(Scroll down for English)

We had a charity concert for the Tohoku victims this past Sunday, November 20. Our special musician guest was Shizu Takeshita. The Takeshitas have been a part of our church fabric and ministry from the early days (2003) of the church. We regard them as our own church family.

Chikara Takeshita shared a great message in the morning service about Nehemiah's rebuilding of the Jerusalem walls, building parallels with the challenge that Japan faces as it rebuilds Tohoku, and we face as believers as we recover from personal catastrophes in life.

In the afternoon, Shizu shared her music and voice talent with us. Shizu is an accomplished singer and songwriter. She shared a number of well known hymns, and many original pieces. Her voice and words brought us great healing and comfort from God. Chikara also shared briefly between songs of their volunteer work as a couple in the Tohoku affected areas with small local churches. We sensed the need to continue to pray and support the work of many volunteers, and also were challenged to go again ourselves.

The proceeds from the concert CD sales and freewill offering to toward the relief effort in Tohoku through the Takeshitas in the name of Denen Grace Chapel and our Lord Jesus.

Sharonkai Cooking

(Scroll down for English)

This past Thursday, one of our small groups, Sharonkai, had a joint cooking class at the home of Mrs. Harada in Meguro taught by Yuzo Narumiya.

You may remember that Narumiya-san also played the sax for a concert at Denen Grace this past summer. He's also an experienced cook, having worked in an Italian restaurant, Okutama Bible Camp, and now a seminary's cafeteria kitchen.

Narumiya-san taught us a wonderful new way to prepare chicken. And we all enjoyed a time of fellowship and food together. We praise God for the many gifts God has given to Narumiya with music and cooking. And we are grateful for his sharing those talents with us.

(Scroll down for English)

This past Saturday (10/29) a group of students from Tokyo Christian University came and shared their puppet show talent. We had a Kids Fun event at Cozy Hall. They did a great job!

Most Saturdays kids are busy with sports or cram school study and it is hard for them to attend. But we had some first time visitors and several church kids. Everyone was a little nervous at the beginning, but gradually they warmed up to the TCU team and really enjoyed the games, songs, and puppet show.

The puppet show was a script based on the story of Daniel and the lions from Daniel 6 in the Old Testament. In spite of the evil scheming of the king's men, Daniel chose to obey and honor only God. And God protected him and blessed him for it. Once again we learned the importance of loving, obeying and trusting God in the middle of hard circumstances.

We are grateful for the TCU students taking time in the middle of their studies to come all the way to Denen Grace to share their ability and play with our kids.

Remember that our next Kids Fun event will be a celebration of Christmas, the birth of Christ, and held on December 18. Please come!

Phil Waters Visit

 (Scroll down for English)

Visitors from the southern California this past Sunday included Pastor Phil Waters. As many know, Phil is an important part of Denen Grace Chapel's history.

Phil was involved in church planting here in Japan for many years before needing to return to the States because of his wife, Sharon's, health needs. Resettling in California he continued in Japanese ministry and church planting work with Mission Door. Three Japanese wives living in the area became a part of this church work. When the ladies returned to Japan with their families, they continued to gather regularly for Bible study and fellowship and reach out to other ladies with similar overseas experiences.

Several years later these ladies would become the core of a new church work in Kawasaki, our own Denen Grace Chapel, under missionaries Kevin and Kaori Laverman. This past Sunday at Denen was a kind of reunion for many that had known Pastor Phil while in the States. He gave a great message (click here) on faithful and unfaithful servanthood.

Phil brought a team of seventeen people from the States to volunteer in relief work in Miyako and Taro in Iwate-ken. Five of them joined us for our worship service. Thank you, Phil, for your love for Japan and Japanese people and your continued impact in the life of our church.

Fall Outdoor Service

(Scroll down for English)

Denen Grace people gathered for our fall outdoor service this past Sunday at Kinuta Park in Setagaya. Of course the key to a great outdoor service is great weather. Every year around the beginning of October we start to watch the weather forecasts to see what is in store. This year's forecast called for rain from Friday through late Saturday, which put Sunday in questionable territory. But God is good. He blew the Saturday night clouds, wind and rain out of the area ahead of schedule.

Sunday morning Kevin and another church member came to Kinuta Park to check the ground. It was damp from the previous night's rainfall, but not too soggy. The sky was still overcast. But with the forecast calling for a return of sunshine by 10am, we went ahead with our plans for the day. By the time people gathered for our service, the sun had come out and dried up the remaining wetness. We sang worship songs and listened to John Houlette's short message under a clear, blue sky with a gentle breeze. Perfect fall weather!

Branch and Clay small groups came up with some really fun games. The gestures game had us all laughing hard at each other's clues to Bible stories and objects. It's always a fun time of togetherness for our church people.

Thanks, God, for taking care of the weather concerns and giving us a good day together as a church family in your creation.

Returnees in Kanagawa (RIK)

RIK 2011/10/1 CrossCurrents
(Scroll down for English)

Every year thousands of Japanese travel overseas to live as students, businessmen, and educators. Separated from the entanglements of their home culture, many Japanese become Christians while overseas. And every year, after 1 year or many years abroad, thousands of Japanese return back to their homeland as changed people.

The fact is that proportionally MANY MORE Japanese become believers while outside their country. The difficulty becomes connecting these new believers to a church where they can continue to grow when they eventually return home. Often, Japanese returnees find it difficult to blend back into church life in Japan. Their experiences are not completely understood. The renewed pressures of reverse culture shock, family and work expectations, overwhelm their new faith. Many will fade away from church involvement. This is a great spiritual tragedy in the evangelization of Japan!

RIK (Returnees in Kanagawa) is a group of Christian returnees whose desire it is to change the above tragedy. We want to welcome back and strengthen returnees of all ages, and help them connect with a local church. Denen Grace Chapel is closely involved with RIK, with several of its members composing the core or helping in its meetings. We share the burden to care for returnees, as our own church has returnee members at its core.

Would you pray that God will use RIK to encourage returnees, regardless of whether they have yet made a decision yet for Christ, so that a great harvest of souls result, and the church in Japan would grow strong?

Clay Group Retreat

(Scroll down for English)

One of the best areas in the Kanto area, in our opinion, is Yamanakako near the base of Mount Fuji. One of Denen's small groups, Clay, spent two nights and three days in the area for a fun fall retreat together. Not all of our small group members were able to attend, but those that did had a chance to learn more about each other, about God, and were able to relax and spend some time in His creation.

We drove down through some leftover drizzle the day after typhoon 15 made a direct hit on Kanto. The lake water had overflowed its banks and many trees were down. That didn't stop us for enjoying the crisp fall weather. Thursday night we watched a funny movie together. Friday  after walking, cycling and lunch, we visited the local flower park (above photo), and then the local onsen. We BBQed up a great feast afterwards. For our evening meeting, Pastor Tanazawa came as a guest speaker to share about the essence of Christianity, and God's wisdom for living and working in our places of employment.

After spending another leisurely morning in Yamanakako, having devotions together, we drove to a windmill on the hillside of Gotemba, a great spot for lunch. The photo below shows us in front of Mount Fuji (if it wasn't hidden by clouds). The view of the valley was breathtaking.

God gave us a lot of laughs and little blessings during our time together. We're already looking forward to our next retreat together. Why don't you join us, too?

Twice Mine

(Scroll down for English)

Our relationship with our Father God is like the story of a boy who spent many days making himself a sailboat. When the boat was finished, he took it down to the stream to see if it would sail. Proudly he walked along the river bank as his little craft glided erect on the rippling waters – its white sail curved in the summer breeze. But to his distress the ship soon headed out into the middle of the stream, too far for him to reach. Further and further it sailed until gradually it disappeared from sight. It was a heartbroken lad who returned home that evening.

Weeks later he saw his sailboat in a pawnshop window, the very boat which he had made and rigged and painted with such meticulous care! He asked the operator of the pawnshop if he could have the boat back, but his heart sank when the man replied: “Only if you pay the price that is marked on its tag.”

For weeks the lad worked to earn the price of the boat. Finally, with money in hand he returned to the shop, placed the money on the counter, and said, “Please, Sir, I'd like to have my boat.” As he left the store with the boat in hand, he looked at it with the feeling of pride, joy, and affection which little boys lavish on the creations of their own hands, and said: “You're mine, little boat, mine twice-over. Once because I made you. Twice because I bought you.”

Like most analogies go, the story is imperfect – but the way that little boy felt about his boat is similar to the way God feels about you and me. The Bible tells us: “It is He who made us, and we are His” (Ps.100:3). It tells us further: “You were bought with a price” (1Co.6:20). And it even tells us the price that was paid to buy us back: “You were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ” (1Pt.1:19). It is as if He says to us much like the boy said to his boat: “You are mine, little one. You're mine twice over. Once because I made you; twice because I bought you.”

The Skippers Visit

(Scroll down for English)

Dave and Heidi (& Kira) Skipper, Japan Baptist Fellowship missionaries, visited with us this past Sunday 9/11. Heidi is an accomplished violinist and accompanied Kaori Laverman during our morning service. The duet of piano and violin contributed greatly to the beauty and depth of our worship time. We were also blessed by the special number she play, a Bach Partita. Heidi is also helping get kids gospel music choirs started together with help from Ken Taylor.

After the service Dave introduced his own music talent. Electronic and digital sounds put together for a genre known as "noise". His music ability is a strong counterpart to Heidi's classic style, but none the less amazing in its own richness and emotional movement. He is playing in a number of venues in Tokyo.

If you are interested in getting to know more about the Skippers' work in Japan, drop them an email sometime here.

Footprints

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed He was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from His life. For each scene He noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonging to Him and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of His life flashed before Him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of His life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of His life.

This really bothered Him and He questioned the LORD about it. LORD you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.

The LORD replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you! During your times of trial when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

Taro Relief

Kids English Bee in Taro 7/26/2011
(Scroll down for English)

God loved Taro before her history began. He wept alongside them in their three tsunami tragedies. He is loving Taro now through his people: talking with residents, delivering food items, offering to pray, asking about their needs, and playing with children. I like to think that we were the hug of Father God for brokenhearted people. It was so easy to do and felt great.

Fishing communities along the coast of Japan are especially resistant to the gospel message, but I sensed that Taro can change by this ongoing Christian presence. They called the volunteers "Kirisutosha." What a privilege to be identified with Christ! It is a term similar to what Antioch called early believers they couldn't make sense of. My prayer is that more "Kirisutosha" will go to towns like Taro to show the love of Father God.  -- Kevin Laverman

Summer Family Concert

(Scroll down for English)

For this year's summer concert we invited Narumiya-san to share his saxophone talent with us. It was a lot of fun to hear the variety of saxophones he used, each with its own distinctive sound. He surprised us by sustaining a single note for a couple minutes. Psalm 150:6 encourages, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." I'm not sure how one has breath for that kind of praise, but God surely has blessed this man with great ability. The kids really enjoyed the concert, too, sneaking up repeatedly to the front row to get a better view of things. After the concert we enjoy a summer treat: shaved ice, of course, in four flavors. Ironically, it was the chilliest day in an otherwise hot, hot August. Those hand crank machines really got a workout. Everyone went home with tongues of different color. Thanks everyone for a great afternoon!

The Pianist

(Scroll down for English)

Ignace Jan Paderewski, the famous composer-pianist, was scheduled to perform at a great concert hall in America. It was an evening to remember - black tuxedos and long evening dresses, a high-society extravaganza. Present in the audience that evening was a mother with her fidgety nine-year-old son. Weary of waiting, he squirmed constantly in his seat. His mother was in hopes that her son would be encouraged to practice the piano if he could just hear the immortal Paderewski at the keyboard. So - against his wishes - he had come.

As she turned to talk with friends, her son could stay seated no longer. He slipped away from her side, strangely drawn to the ebony concert grand Steinway and its leather tufted stool on the huge stage flooded with blinding lights. Without much notice from the sophisticated audience, the boy sat down at the stool, staring wide-eyed at the black and white keys. He placed his small, trembling fingers in the right location and began to play "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." The roar of the crowd was hushed and hundreds of frowning faces pointed in his direction. Irritated and embarrassed, they began to shout: "Get that boy away from there!" "Who'd bring a kid that young in here?" "Somebody stop him!"

Backstage, the master overheard the sounds out front and quickly put together in his mind what was happening. Hurriedly, he grabbed his coat and rushed toward the stage. Without one word of announcement he stooped over behind the boy, reached around both sides, and began to improvise a countermelody to harmonize with and enhance "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." As the two of them played together, Paderewski kept whispering in the boy's ear: "Keep going. Don't quit. Keep on playing...don't stop...don't quit."

And so it is with us. We hammer away on our project, which seems about as significant as "Twinkle Twinkle" in a concert hall. And about the time we are ready to give up, along comes the Master. God whispers: "Now keep going; don't quit. Keep on...don't stop; don't quit" as He improvises on our behalf, providing just the right touch at just the right moment.
